Today in my typical news gathering and searching I came across an open letter/blog post from Michael Tiemann, the president of OSI [the Open Source Initiative]. He officially called out all the companies (/organizations) that are using the Open Source label incorrectly.
Some of these companies are purposely trying to deceive potential customers and users. Others are just using the licensing wrong and they make the changes to that their Open Source software has the right license. Mr. Tiemann, has no problem with organizations that make these corrections and set things right.
However, the big problem is coming from those that want to twist things from the already stated definition. The OSI has defined and set a standard for Open Source. They have been the community recognized spearhead since their inception in 1998. I have to admit that Mr. Tiemann & the OSI Board probably know what they are doing and I would concede that they do it well.
