Every once in a while I come across something that catches me off guard, and Nexenta is one of those things! It is a cross between a familiar face, new technology, and Solaris. Nexenta has been designed to take advantage of all the hot new GNU/Linux features in the open source community. It is an exciting and revolutionary!
Paul Murphy of ZD Net said, “It’s an example of things to come, things that scare IBM and Red Hat: a complete ZFS bootable OpenSolaris distribution combining the GNU and other open source utilities with a Solaris kernel -and it’s downloadable free of charge from opensolaris.org.” (1) I have to admit that one of my personal turn offs to Solaris has been its ugly interface, but with the Ubuntu face and ZFS file system; this could be the next huge *nix distro. (2)
The team is looking to make all of the Ubuntu software packages available to users. Their confidence is rather high, they are running their website on a Nexenta OS server, crazy – but it is one way to back up their claim to it greatness. (2)
I am looking forward to testing it out and seeing how it works. I think that name is lacking, but hey I am sure that is that people thought when they first heard of Ubuntu.
