Mr. Ledin is getting flack from McAfee and Symantec because of his work and the education he is providing to his students. One of Ledin’s students said, “You can’t really have a defense plan if you don’t know what the other guy’s offense is.” I have to agree.

Dwight Silverman over at the Houston Chronicle posted a nice little story about malware moving to Macs. I have to admit that he makes a few good points. One point I disagree with is, “many of the people who are now using Macs are people who don’t learn from their mistakes”. 2 of the 3 switchers that I know are all well aware of malware in it’s many forms; and the 3rd probably will have her husband install any software she needs.

I also know that this is 1 of 2 ‘wild’ malware programs on the net; while there are hundreds of thousands for Windows. Just based on the odds, OS X is in less danger than XP or Vista of getting hacked. Yes, it is true that as Apple market share grows so will the number of viruses, spyware, and trojans for OS X.

With this in mind, we also need to remember that Apple has released it’s Leopard Security Guide and has announced that Snow Leopard will focus on increasing the security in OS X.

No software is perfect, in fact, according to Steve Gibson from GRC.com and Security Now, “code wants to be wrong”.

The War is coming to OS X, but we can be prepared and educated.

Wow! Talk about an early morning surprise! Here I am working away checking on the servers and systems running on our network and I listening to the latest NetCasts and what do I hear?

My own name! I couldn’t believe it, but at the end of the latest Security Hype NetCast the gave IronWil.net a shout out for my adding them to my BlogRoll. Now do you want to know something interesting . . . when I posted last nights Security Now NetCast I was considering if I should add Security Hype to my regular NetCast reminders. Well they just pushed me over to YES!

Security Hype 8.1 – Our 2008 Predictions

They have some interesting predictions, like a BotNet war that will take down parts of the net [as fallout], OS X will see it first real malware [virus or otherwise] and IPV6 Hacks.

“Sir Tim Berners-Lee, credited as the inventor of the Web, has described online security as a ‘never-ending battle’.”1

The importance of this statement is that security, whether online or physical, is always changing and it is a never-ending battle! I am not trying to be an alarmist, talk to anybody in the security industry and they will tell you that things are changing all the time. The good news is that if we are conscious of where we browse, what eMails we open, and what links we click we can protect ourselves better than any software.

When I was a teen, my father was serving in the Army and we were stationed in Germany [which is a fabulous place]. This was a great! We loved it and always enjoyed the food, culture, and people – one thing that we didn’t enjoy was all the trouble some political refugees could cause. We were constantly taught to be aware of our surroundings and pay attention to suspicious looking/acting people. This was not hard, dad taught us things to look for and so did the AFN [Armed Forces Network] commercials that were on the limited US TV channel that was broadcast. To this day my favorite spot in a restaurant is the one where I can put my back to a corner [which bugs my wife a little].

I still watch for suspicious looking/acting people and try to pay a lot of attention to my surroundings. I know since I have been state side for years that I didn’t have to keep these skills up, but I have! I have become just as conscious about where I browse online and with good Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware, I have not had ANY virus or malware problems on my computer [thank goodness].

There are many good programs that help with computer security, but user error still accounts for the majority of problems.
