While, I am really seeing speed and sharp graphics, I am still cleaning up my mess from 2 weeks ago when I totally screwed up my install of Snow Leopard.

I have 2 very large tasks left, cleaning up my Address Book and re-tagging Faces & Places in iPhoto. I then only have one other thing that isn’t working right and that is SuperDuper!. It is completing a back-up; but it is taking much longer than before like 30 minutes more than before. I have made minimal changes to my hard drive content since I got most everything working again. And the speed at which SuperDuper! operates is killing me. I have had to leave it running for up to 1.5 hours just to do the Smart Update!!

That is much longer than the 10 minutes it used to take with Leopard and no changes to my hard drive. Which according to the SuperDuper! blog is caused by the way Snow Leopard and SuperDuper! are handling certain /System Files. They are currently working on the issue and I hope that an update comes very soon. In other comments, Dave Nanian, suggests that you recreate your Scheduled Back-Ups to make sure that they are running properly.

Okay, it has been a couple of days and I felt an update was needed. I have installed the 1Password Beta and have started to input my passwords into the new package. I am really happy with some of the changes I see in Snow Leopard, some of the graphics are really crisp and detailed. I really like the labeled Exposé windows too!

I have SuperDuper! up and running again and I have most of my site and everything else setup. All in all for a disaster, it wasn’t as bad as my first hard drive crash back in 2001. Of course, I only had my computer a month and Western Digital replaced it right away. It didn’t take long to rebuild and acquire an operating system that was much more robust than Windows ME.

Snow Leopard is very nice, the load times on reboot or cold start. The screen switching for Spaces is lightning fast and I have to admit that I am looking forward to running the install for my wife on the iMac. I will make sure that I have 2 back-ups before I start that install.

Okay, I totally bombed the first round and Snow Leopard kicked my crack. I made a huge error in my back-ups and so I couldn’t just roll back to Leopard. I had only been backing up my Home Folder. The good thing is that MANY Mac Apps can be installed and then the Application Support folder can be dropped into [Drive Name]/Library/Application Support/[App Folder] & voilá the App comes back to life with all your data.

This does not happen with every App and so, I would recommend doing full back-ups and not making the same mistake that I made. I am about 90% of the way there. I have to manually add my calendar items back into iCal and I have to figure out a way to recover my data from my Treo without losing it. Because of the 1Password problem, I am having to go back through and add items to 1Password manually, but that is less of a problem than the passwords I didn’t have in the HTML file I exported about 2 weeks ago.

So, the #1 lesson from this experience? Make sure you have good back-ups before you monkey with your system. Man, what a bad example to set . . . well, I ain’t perfect.

I installed Snow Leopard last night with minimal problems, the biggest problem was 1Password. I had a few applications that stopped working, like AirTrafficControl [a Dashboard Widget]. It did not run in 64-Bit mode. This morning, I am doing a clean install so that I can reboot from external back up and fix the 1Password issue. Then I will use Migration Assistant to move my accounts over.

I like the interface and Expose looked really nice. So, I am listening to Windows Weekly from TWiT, installing OS X: Snow Leopard, and the surfing on the Mini 10.

I am hoping that my recovery and work-around will work. If not, install Leopard and then recover my data, and update the 1Password db. Backup the disk and [clean] reinstall Snow Leopard. Then finally migrate the accounts.

If you are savvy enough to know what a Windows Home Server [WHS] is, then you may have already seen this article by Ars Technica. On the 14th of October, the posted an in depth view of WHS and how it works. You can read the article here.

I am quite impressed by Microsoft with this product, it is rather innovative and very forward looking. To offer a product that makes it easier for families or small offices to have an easy to use Back-Up solution. It seems smart, using single-instance storage, where the system only keeps a single file on copy even when that file is located across the home network. I am curious on if this means all files or just system files; thinking that a document pulled of my wife’s computer, edited, but not renamed would mean it is two separate files[?].

I like that it has centrally managed shared files and access permissions. A really nice feature is that the system requirements are low “1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a 70GB hard drive, and a NIC [Network Interface Card] are the minimum requirements . . ..”1 This makes it easy for some one with a bit of knowledge to build their own system. One would have to buy the OS, but that is priced at about 200$. I have a feeling that my parent will end up with one in the next year or two.

I must agree with Ars Technica that additional features like Anti-Virus [AV] and Update Management are must haves for the next version of WHS. Including, unbiased AV support for products like AVG or ClamWin. Things it does not support are OS X and Linux, plug-ins could fill this gap, I am interested to see where things go.
