I know this is totally out on a limb; however, think of the stores that have been broken into because a car or truck was used to drive through the front glass panels.

This week I noticed something quite interesting3 different articles [Google: We don't do Windows; Google to employees: 'Mac or Linux, but no more Windows'; and Mac OS X and Linux are no magic security bullet for Google] covering Google letting go or Windows machines because of the security vulnerabilities. The attack on Google via Internet Explorer that caused the loss of Google Code was announced last year. This year Google is moving their employees off of Windows boxes to Linux or Mac OS machines.

They even point out this is a security move for the company and they intend to cycle over 20,000 computers. That is a lot of hardware a whole lot of hardware!!! It is an interesting and impressive move.

I know that there are Windows users that are going to call this bogus and complain and Troll the blogs; but either way, Google has made a statement.

iron wil

My 2¢:
Go Google! Windows is becoming more secure and more reliable. Mac & Linux have been leading with certain features and a stronger security posture. Those computers [Windows] are a big target and hopefully, that target will shrink because the software is becoming more secure.

Information Week’s Apple expert John Welch posted 22 Mac Apps that he recommends for every Mac user. In reading his post and looking at the Apps he suggested I have found some I will be testing. I am testing Transmit 3, which is an FTP client from Panic Software. I tried the previous version, but I didn’t stick with it because it didn’t ‘remember’ my sites correctly. It was a pain. So far Transmit 3 has done well, I have 2 more sites to test before I can render a decision.

He also features Microsoft’s Entourage, Microsoft’s RDP Client, TypeIt4Me [which I plan to test], Parallels Desktop for Mac [which is cheaper than Mac Office], Boot Camp, SnapZ Pro X, and many more. I will warn you that some of them have a hefty price tag, like Apple Remote Desktop [299$ for 10 machines], while other’s are free, Microsoft’s RDP Client for the Mac. I have used the RDP Client for remote access and it worked rather well – I am impressed with it.

Check them out, John did a good job putting this list together.

I again am flabbergasted by Microsoft. They are lobbying countries in the Standards Community to get their OpenXML approved as a second standard to ODF. I would think that they would understand that the world community only needs ONE! And that one is ODF, it has already been chosen.

I have to give kudos to Mark Shuttleworth for his post regarding the situation. He has provided additional insight and some information on what to do to help defeat Microsoft’s attempt to push itself into the arena instead of accepting the ODF standard. His final point is that this is like HTML, one standard with many implementations1. One can use Firefox, IE, Safari, or Opera to surf the web. Why can’t we have a document format like this?

We have a good solid standard. We need to support the ODF standard and get others on board. Speaking of which, Malaysia just announced their support and backing of the ODF standard2. You would think after the ZD Australia article and the commenting and criticizing of Microsoft across the web, including here, that they would see some of this and get a clue as to what the people want. But as we know, they are more concerned with their bank account.

I believe that the better standard has ‘won’ and that OpenXML will follow in the footsteps of things like Passport and Bob.

If you are interested in computer network or hard drive forensics this is a good place to read and learn.

I have been listening to Security Now with Leo Laporte & Steve Gibson for a few months. In a netcast sometime back, Steve mentioned his “Perfect Password” page at GRC.com. So, I decided to check it out and am very impressed by his “pseudo-random” password generator. This page creates a unique 64 character key [ie. DA4AD54A99813CF3 - 5F7AC16C1BC91CAD - 7F8356D92095D07B - 2EA6539A439F3906*], and one 63 ASCII key, and one 63 alpha-numeric key.

You can use this for websites, wireless access points, and any other place you need a strong random password. On his password page he also provides additional information about the key creation process. If you need cryptographically-strong passwords, this is the place to get them!

(*Note: I broke this key up to ensure that it would fit this page)
