This is a huge subject that covers many aspects. We have Facebook pushing Facebook Connect, we have Open Authentication, a small group looking at delivering a distributed ID system, and browsers taking a crack at possible ways to deliver our online identities. There are opinions all over the map from guys like Jason Calacanis, Leo Laporte, and Steve Gibson.

I am not sure what the answer is; but I have to admit that I like Diaspora and am interested in what they end up doing. They received massive amounts of cash to deliver a product they came up with. Each person will hold their own ID and control how it is used. Mozilla has presented Thirdparty and Fingerprinting. Jason Calacanis has also ranted his displeasure on Facebook‘s Privacy while Leo Laporte has walked away from Facebook because the Privacy Policy has changed several times.

Facebook has now reached 500 Million daily users and is showing very little slowdown. Twitter is great for short messages and sharing right now news. Google is now working on a not so secret project titled ‘Google Me‘ a potential competitor to Facebook. Then we have Open Authentication or Open ID which is designed to deliver single sign on across the web; something that Microsoft tried to deliver years ago with Passport. There is such confusion over what the best solution will be.

Diaspora seems to bring the best ideas together by allowing the users to own the server, software, and information. It provides a single sign on that is controlled by the user.

What should the solution be?

That is a really good question. One, I have been considering for weeks, which is obvious since I am just getting this article finished & posted. I think that the best solution will allow for cross platform compatibility and easy user deployment. Software that can be installed similar to WordPress or Joomla. Plug-ins to enable additional features and content or games and video. It should be easy to update and take care of so that the average web user can manage their account and software. I imagine that several hosting companies, like DreamHost and SquareSpace, will provide managed installs. I hope that it will interface with Facebook and Twitter and several other services. It would make sense to me, that is always the hitch, that in order to compete and over take the competition; it will have to be very open and powerful. It would also need to provide Open Authentication [Open ID] like access to websites and deliver single sign-on services to a multitude of sites and services.

When it happens … the next social network evolution will change the way we communicate and interact. It will also change who owns the data and where that data resides. My personal hope is that projects like Diaspora will finally overcome the larger social juggernauts.

In a recent episode of MacBreak Weekly [203: That's Our Lenny] the guys discussed if OS X has a future with Apple. I believe that Alex Lindsey gave OS X 5 years before it goes out the window. He theorized that Apple will move into consumer products and minimize or depart from desktop computers. I have to agree & disagree.

I don’t think that Apple will move off OS X unless it is to another desktop OS [11?]. I don’t think that they will move to iOS for their “Trucks” either, how else would people program for Apple products [pro & consumer]? I think that if they move to a touch based OS for “OS 11″ then we will see programming change to a modular and visual interface and the keyboard will still be needed for some functions. The only way the keyboard could be minimized is if a Star Trek like voice command is implemented.

What I think will happen is Apple will develop it’s Siri acquisition to build a more robust voice command interface and then over time move it into the desktop computer while beefing up the touch interface. I also think that the home desktop will turn into a media server that will be connected via Wi-Fi to the TV, stereo, and hand-held devices [iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touches]. We will use the Knowledge Navigator [hand-held device] to interface with the home server and it will do the heavy lifting and data crunching. It will store and back-up all the data from our devices and allow for the transfer of songs, movies, and other data back and forth via Wi-Fi. Yes, this will work with the iPod Nano and Classic too!

The future of Apple is the Federation. No really, the future is going to be both trucks and cars, the desktop or work horse machine and the hand-held device. The number of desktop machines will diminish because a family will own one & then they will all have hand-held devices. The delivery of media will continue to be in two places the TV and the hand-held. We will see the ability to move from one device to another and the media will follow seamlessly.

Ahhh, the future, please come now!!!

This week I noticed something quite interesting3 different articles [Google: We don't do Windows; Google to employees: 'Mac or Linux, but no more Windows'; and Mac OS X and Linux are no magic security bullet for Google] covering Google letting go or Windows machines because of the security vulnerabilities. The attack on Google via Internet Explorer that caused the loss of Google Code was announced last year. This year Google is moving their employees off of Windows boxes to Linux or Mac OS machines.

They even point out this is a security move for the company and they intend to cycle over 20,000 computers. That is a lot of hardware a whole lot of hardware!!! It is an interesting and impressive move.

I know that there are Windows users that are going to call this bogus and complain and Troll the blogs; but either way, Google has made a statement.

iron wil

My 2¢:
Go Google! Windows is becoming more secure and more reliable. Mac & Linux have been leading with certain features and a stronger security posture. Those computers [Windows] are a big target and hopefully, that target will shrink because the software is becoming more secure.

Are Technica has several articles on the subject with the latest one, Pirate Party hosting Pirate Bay in pro-P2P political gesture being the latest one. The copyright battle is ongoing and this is going to be a much bigger fight than the RIAA or the MPAA could have imagined. This is not a US vs. the World battle, this is a copyright and usage argument. It comes down to letting others use material for creative purposes or not. The big companies will try to prevent the usage of media and materials for creative endeavors.

File sharers will still trade things online. The difference will be whether there will be fair use for creative purposes or not. I am siding with fair use.

Scoopertino is a well done FAKE news site that targets Apple and the shenanigans that surround the company; things like the lost iPhone, iPad 2.0 Demo, and several other items that have been in the news and rumor mill.

Mark’s NewsToons App for the iPhone received a lot of attention when it was turned down and then approved at the App Store. I came across his video Obama vs. Obama; but don’ t let that discourage you; because he mocks everyone.

If you have been paying attention, Apple recently bought Siri, ‘Your Virtual Personal Assistant’. Their tag line … “You Ask, Siri Does”. 3G and soon to come 4G services, or ubiquitous wireless services and a person can get access to their data anywhere. It is coming and I am excited to see next years products.

So, if you take all the things I have been thinking about the iPad from my previous posts, it is understandable where Apple is going. They know what they are looking forward and planning for. Do you see it?

It was not a big surprise to me that we were attacked on the 11th of September (2001). The size of the attack was a surprise, a huge surprise.

I grew up with the Army and we were trained to look for things out of place. Commercials on AFN always talked about looking for the person that stood out or paid to much attention to ‘you’. I learned to look for people that acted out of place and to this day I get fidgety when in a restaurant and I can’t see most of the people & the doors. I grew accustomed to terrorism happening, when I lived overseas it was a regular occurrence somewhere in Europe. Sometimes it was directed at Americans and sometimes it was directed at others.

I was surfing the web when I came across this wallpaper titled Remember.

The attack on 9/11 is paramount to Pearl Harbor and so many people don’t remember that day either. It is sad that American’s don’t understand patriotism and honor anymore. We don’t, as a people, even know what our country is about or why it was established. We don’t respect the men and women that have sacrificed so much for the bright future we have today.

We are what a friend calls “UA” or “Ugly Americans”. He reserves that label for Americans when they travel abroad; but I think more and more it applies to Americans in their own country. Yes, I think we are that deplorable collectively. I know that there are pockets of politeness and respect & that there are those with values that still live them.

“We the People” are not thinking about what is best for the country in the whole. We are to focused on what is best for our group, special interest or religious or something else. We are creating our own downfall and we will fall into ruin because we are not united as Americans. We will fall like the Romans and they fell because of their internal divisions.

I just finished “The Gathering” by Annie Laurie & Brian Richardson. If I didn’t know them or know their story, it would be hard to believe this book. I know them & I have to tell you that this is a fantastic book! It is a story of faith, love, courage, and trial. It is a story about a family that is spread out over the whole face of the earth and how a couple work to find their children and bring them home. This book is a must have for anybody that has faith in the God of Heaven.

This book was written to tell the story of the challenges that they faced and to show once again that miracles do exist. That God, or Heavenly Father listens to our prayers and answers them and that each of us can have a life filled with faith if we will seek the god of Heaven and worship Him.
