Veteran’s Day 2008

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Veterans Day is an annual American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is usually observed on November 11. However, if it occurs on a Sunday then the following Monday is designated for holiday leave, and if it occurs Saturday then either Saturday or Friday may be so designated.[1] It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

The holiday is commonly printed as Veteran’s Day or Veterans’ Day in calendars and advertisements. While these spellings are grammatically acceptable, the United States government has declared that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling.[2]

Patch Tuesday - 2008.11.11

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Security is a process and a state of mind - not a place that can be reached in a day of travel. It is very important to get your software updates. While this doesn’t guarantee iron-clad security it will improve your chances of being secure.

Another reason I love Apple . . .

5th Gen iPod

This week my iPod started acting up and it wouldn’t sync with our iMac no matter what I did. I even booted my MacBook up on the XP partition and converted it to a Windows based iPod [file format]. I double checked the firmware, and even restored it [5 times].  Nothing worked.

So, Thursday was a horrible, long day without music or netcasts or audiobooks. Thursday night I got it to load netcasts & audiobooks, which made Friday a much better day. Today, Lauren took my iPod to the nearest Apple Store and they looked at the screenshots I took and listened to the story. The Genius put my iPod to his ear, heard the HD grinding and said, well, let me get you a replacement. Needless to say, the 60$ in Apple Care [which ends on the 25th of November]- worth it!!!

I recommend that people pay for the Apple Care when they buy the products because the service and value is HUGE.  I know it sounds crazy to somel however, I have found it to be very worth the extra cost. It is also much cheaper than what you can get through PC manufacturers for the same kind of service and ease of replacement.

I know of others that have needed to make a statement to get problems resolved (i.e., Michael). However, these cases are the exception to the rule; and in Michael’s case the rumor mill said they replaced his MacBook after he posted the video.

Personally, once you go Mac, you don’t go back.
