Mobile Moving towards Freedom

Friday, February 29th, 2008

I didn’t have time to work on this yesterday, but I felt it was noteworthy and wanted to bring it forward. Darren Waters from the BBC who writes the dot.life blog had an interview with Andy Rubin of Google and got a demo of Android [which is still in Alpha].

I am really looking forward to seeing how Android shapes the future of Mobile Phones and Mobile Computing [which the iPhone has really pushed to the forefront]. I am really excited to see [hands on] what the software will be capable of doing. With the expected changes [Verizon & AT&T opening their Wireless Networks] coming this year, I hope to see both AT&T and Verizon pick this up when it is a finished and polished product. It will also be interesting to see where and how other coders and system hackers implement the software. With open Wi-Fi becoming more pervasive and the availability of systems like the ASUS Eee PC, PSP, iPhone, and Nokia’s [N800] Internet Tablet; we may see system hacks that revolutionize the Mobile Phone/Computing markets.

I know that whatever happens, we are moving into exciting times. Now, if I could get the iPhone [without having to hack it] on my preferred wireless carrier.

Inventory your Disks

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Reader technolust recently asked me how she could see what is on her flash drive. I asked don’t you know what you have saved there? Well, yeah, but that doesn’t mean I can visualize what I have taking up space. I had seen Disk Visualizers before and even tried them.

Since she asked, I looked these up for her.

Windows: WinDirStat

OS X: Disk Inventory X

see what you have stored.

iPod Firewire Error

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Every now and again I have something interesting come across my desk.

Today a co-worker came in very concerned because her iPod was acting up. On the screen it had a message about the device not being compatible with firewire cables. I asked and she doesn’t own one. “Hmmm . . . Okay I will see what I can find for you.”

So, I found this link on the Apple Forums. It seems there are some mixed results; however, happysnappah got his to work and so did another person following his directions.

If you have this problem and try the fix let me know. I will post updates from my co-worker too.

New Security Hype 8.2 NetCast

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Bill and Bob discuss what other people think are the information security trends for 2008.

Paul Kocher’s theory is that you don’t “win” at security, the best you can hope for is to be able to keep playing: a “stalemate” mentality versus a “checkmate” mentality. That’s a great theory, but Bill’s trying to figure out how we declare “success” in the computer and information security space. For instance, by what measure can we declare that we’ve done a better job in 2007 than in 2006?

What do YOU think will rock the security world in 2008?
